If you're wondering why people leave your website without calling, the cause is rarely one big thing. It's usually one of four silent killers — small faults you never notice because your own site loads fine on your own phone. Here's how to catch each one yourself.
Why people leave your website without calling
Someone searching for you already wants what you sell. If they land on your site and leave, something got in the way in the first few seconds. Four culprits cause most of it, and every one is checkable in a single afternoon.
1. It's slow on a phone
Most visits are on mobile, often on patchy signal. A page that takes several seconds to appear loses people before it even shows up. Check it: open your site on your phone using mobile data, not wifi, and count the seconds. If you're still waiting at three or four, that's a leak. Our full guide covers whether your site is slow on mobile and how to check.
2. The contact form silently fails
This is the cruellest one. Plenty of forms look perfect and send nothing — a broken setting, a wrong email address, an over-eager spam filter. You'd never know, because there's no error; the customer just assumes you ignored them. Check it: fill in your own form as a stranger would and confirm the email actually arrives. More on this in why nobody is filling in your contact form.
3. It's unusable on mobile
This is separate from speed. Think tiny text, buttons too small to tap, needing to pinch and zoom, or a menu that won't open on a phone. Check it: use your site one-handed on your phone. Can you find the phone number and tap it within five seconds, without zooming? If you can't, neither can your customer.
4. The opening hours or phone number are wrong
The quiet business-killer. Wrong hours send people to a closed door; a dead number gets one call and never a second. This information rots whenever a site can't be easily edited. Check it: read every phone number and every opening time as if you'd never seen them before.
How to check all four in one sitting
- On your phone, on mobile data, load the site and time it.
- Tap the phone number — does it dial?
- Find and read the opening hours.
- Submit the contact form and watch for the email.
- Try the menu and main buttons one-handed.
Most owners who do this find at least one problem they had no idea about. The good news: every one of these is fixable, and fixing them works on the website you already have.
When it keeps happening
If you fix all four and still lose people, the issue is usually clarity — the site doesn't say quickly enough why someone should choose you. That's exactly what a good site is built to do, and it often starts with getting found in the first place: see why you might be missing from Google Maps, and what we do to fix the whole chain.
Fixing the four, one at a time
The reassuring part of understanding why people leave your website without calling is that every cause has a clear, affordable fix — and you can tackle them in order of impact rather than all at once.
- Slow on a phone — usually oversized images. Resizing and compressing them is often a same-day job.
- Broken form — check where the email is meant to go and test it; frequently it's a single wrong setting.
- Unusable on mobile — bigger text, tappable buttons and a working menu; sometimes a layout tweak, sometimes a rebuild.
- Wrong details — the cheapest fix of all, and the most urgent.
Start with the cheapest, most damaging one
Wrong opening hours or a dead phone number cost you the most and cost almost nothing to fix — so do those first, today. Then work down the list. You rarely need to fix everything before enquiries improve; clearing even one silent killer often makes an immediate difference.
Then check it stays fixed
These faults creep back — a plugin update breaks a form, a new photo slows a page, hours change at Christmas. A quick monthly once-over on your own phone keeps all four in check and stops the leaks reopening without you noticing.
A leak you can't see is still a leak
The hardest part of all four problems is that they're invisible from where you sit. Your site loads fast for you, your form works when you built it, and you know your own opening hours by heart. That's exactly why so many owners never find these faults until they deliberately look. The afternoon you spend checking is almost always worth it.
