Getting found

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps? It's one of the most common questions we hear, and the fix is usually simpler — and cheaper — than a new website. Most of the time it comes down to your Google Business Profile, not your site at all.

First, what a Google Business Profile actually is

Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that powers the little business box in search results and the pin on Google Maps. It holds your name, hours, phone number, photos, reviews and directions. It's completely separate from your website — and for many local businesses it matters more, because it's the first thing a customer sees.

Why your business isn't showing up on Google Maps

If you're missing from Maps, it's usually one of these:

  • You haven't claimed it. A profile may exist but sit unverified. Until you claim and verify it (usually a code by post, phone or email), you don't control it and it may not display properly.
  • Your name, address and phone don't match. If these differ across your website, Facebook and online directories, Google gets unsure which is right and shows you less. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere.
  • No categories, or the wrong ones. Google needs to know what you are. "Business" isn't a category; "Italian restaurant" or "hair salon" is.
  • No photos. Profiles with real photos look legitimate. Empty ones look abandoned, and Google treats them that way.
  • No reviews. Reviews are a strong signal of a real, active business. None at all makes you look new or dormant.
  • You're checking from far away. Maps results are personalised by location. You might rank perfectly well nearby even if you don't appear when searching from another town.

How to fix it, in order

  1. Claim and verify your profile so you're in control of it.
  2. Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere online.
  3. Set the correct primary category, plus any relevant extras.
  4. Add real photos of the place, the team and what you sell.
  5. Start earning honest reviews — here's how to get more Google reviews the right way.
  6. Keep it current: hours, holiday closures, the occasional post.

Claiming and filling in your Google Business Profile is often the single highest-value hour of work a local business can do. It's free, and it can bring in calls before your website does any work at all.

Where the website still matters

Think of it as a relay. Your profile gets you seen; your website closes the deal. If someone taps through from Maps and lands on a slow or confusing page, they bounce straight back to a competitor. Getting found is one of the core things we do for clients, and it usually pairs with a site that's quick and clear — which is also where the question of what a website costs comes in.

How long it takes to show up, and how to keep showing up

Once you've claimed and filled in your profile, results aren't instant. Google needs a little time to trust the information, especially if it's just changed. Give it a couple of weeks before you judge it, and resist the urge to keep tweaking your name and category in the meantime — constant changes make Google more cautious, not less.

Staying visible is an ongoing habit, not a one-off:

  • Add a few fresh photos every month or two.
  • Keep hours accurate, including bank holidays and one-off closures.
  • Reply to reviews as they come in.
  • Post the occasional update — a new product, a seasonal note.

Two profiles for the same business

Occasionally a duplicate listing appears — perhaps one you made and one Google generated automatically. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse the results. If you spot two, you can report the duplicate through Google so they're merged into one strong profile rather than two weak ones.

Consistency is the quiet winner

More than any single trick, the businesses that show up reliably are the ones whose details match everywhere and whose profiles look alive. It's unglamorous, but a complete, consistent, regularly-tended profile beats a clever one-off every time.

Photos and reviews do the heavy lifting

If you only have time for two things after claiming your profile, make them photos and reviews. They're what turn a bare listing into one Google trusts and customers tap. A handful of real, well-lit photos — the shopfront, the inside, a few of your best products — instantly makes you look open and legitimate.

  • Show the outside, so people recognise you from the street.
  • Show the inside, so they know what to expect before they arrive.
  • Show what you sell or make, clearly and honestly.

Reviews then do the rest, quietly reassuring the next person and telling Google you're active. Together they lift a profile faster than any single setting.
